The significance of the LAFerrari

Ferrari has always been known for making some of the best performing and most beautiful supercars in the world. Because of that they have always been highly sought after by drivers, collectors and general enthusiasts. But even Ferrari made the world take notice when they developed a new Supercar and named it the LaFerrari which translated means The Ferrari.

This was one of the 3 cars that strove to establish the new monicker of “Hypercar”. Hypercars are loosely defined as a supercar with a hybrid drivetrain, meaning there is a gas engine as well as an electric drivetrain component. The Porsche 918 Spyder, the McLaren P1 and the LaFerrari were all released around the same time (they are commonly referred to as the Holy Trinity). They had similar specs as far as handling, acceleration and horsepower and even similar pricing, a cool $1.4MM for the LaFerrari. But there was a certain essence about the driving experience for the car Ferrari deemed to be worthy of self-titling and the world took notice.

Only 499 LaFerraris were produced and you had to be personally invited from Ferrari to be able to even purchase this car. Even as a used car, Ferrari still has a say in whether you can buy one. They can’t really stop you legally, but they can blacklist you if they don’t approve of the purchase! Out of it’s Rivals, the LaFerrari immediately rose to the top of the list, accelerating in value overnight. As of the time of this project, high quality examples were trading hands for $3.5MM, nearly 3 times the cost of its original price! We estimate that our Paint Correction and Coating service on this vehicle increased its value by at least $100,000. Not bad for a week of time and 50+ very intense man hours!

Paint Correction

Like most Jet Black cars they need a significant amount of attention to really bring their paint to the highest level of clarity and luster. Limited production cars can be particularly difficult for several reasons; in this case the carbon composite body, thin paint and endlessly curving surfaces made this a perfect storm of difficult paint correction. This of course is even more complicated by the value of the car because during the process of paint correction you are removing damaged clear coat. If we were to over-correct a panel and it would need to be repainted, the loss of value on the car can be significant. Good news for our clients, we treat every single vehicle exactly like we treated this LaFerrari, so it was no trouble for us to perform our well-rehearsed magic on this rare hypercar!

Our Diva Package Detail is designed specifically for Exotic Cars. It is comprehensive approach to correction and protection. We begin by performing a decontamination detail on the exterior to remove any previously installed waxes or sealants form the paint’s surface. Next we use a paint thickness meter to measure the thickness of the paint. This must be preformed all over the vehicle, which depending on the paint’s condition and the type of paint, could be as often as every few square inches! Once the paint depth is mapped out we can begin testing which pad and polish combination will produce the desired results. We start with the least invasive methods and increase them until we find the desired balance of paint correction and paint retention.

This car required a 3-4 step paint correction to achieve the desired mirror-like results. With the complexity in the curved areas, it required the use of several different sized polishers and various types of pads and some areas were so restrictive, we even had to do some sections by hand! There was a few areas that needed some rock chips filled in and required wet sanding to blend them in. Even the process of removing the polishing residue needed special accommodation with a n extremely soft (read: expensive) new cloth and a spritz of Gyeon Prep to give some lubrication in order to not scratch the freshly polished paint. After this tedious task was performed over all of the painted surfaces of the vehicle, it was time to protect it!

Ceramic Pro Coating

Ceramic Pro’s 5 layer system offers a lifetime warranty and was a perfect choice for this situation. We installed 4 layers of the 9H product which is a very hard coating. The 5th and final layer is called Light or Top Coat and offers an extremely glossy and hydrophobic surface. the 5 layers together build up way off the paint and create a Piano Black effect that adds to the breaking finish. Of course it also allows the paint to fully insulated for light to medium scratches so that only the coating needs repaired and not another redo of this involved process.

Coating the wheels on this car was just as demanding as the rest of the vehicle. The LaFerrari, as well as many modern supercars, has a center lock hub system to install the wheels. This can lead to very fast wheel changes at the track, but makes things a little tricky for a studio like ours. We invested in a very specific Torque wrench that is designed to properly re-torque these wheels at a massive 700nm of force. Which correlates to 516 ft/lbs or over 5x what normal lug nuts need to be installed at. Once they were safely off, we quickly polished the black on the wheels and the red calipers to make them just as perfect as the body. Then they were treated to a layer of Ceramic Pro Wheel and Caliper which is great hybrid coating designed for abused surfaces such as wheels, calipers, exhaust, engines, etc.. The wheels were carefully reinstalled and the beautiful LaFerrari was completed! We helped load it onto the private inclosed transport and we said goodbye.

We had held off on any public postings that the Ferrari was being serviced in our studio to accommodate the client’s privacy as well as avoiding too many people stoping in and interrupting the work. Once the car had left our property we began sharing the incredible pictures and videos of the amazing transformation. the car was even featured in an add in the DuPont Registry!

A quick word about the photographer: Sam Young is a Cleveland based professional photographer with an incredible range of photography skills from Cityscapes to Portraits to Boudoir. He is highly sought after for his amazing automotive photography especially his use of light painting. Sam is available for various types of photography regionally, please feel free to reach out to him at www.samyoungstudios.com

We arrived at the Rehab Detailing Studio at 6:30am in order to catch that golden hour of the light coming into our east-facing storefront. Ross carefully drove the Ferrari around the building to allow Sam to get these amazing shots. Then back inside for some additional photo work lasting for several hours! We are grateful for Sam’s amazing talent to have captured such an amazing piece of automotive history as well as our own.
