California Dreaming
Ferrari set out to make the California the best of all worlds when they released it in 2008. In name it was a throwback to the Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder from the late 50s. But this modern variant was designed as a roomy grand touring, hard top convertible with a coupe silhouette. It had back seats and a full size trunk. They didn’t skimp on the performance either with a 453 Horsepower V8 Engine and a high tech 7 speed auto-manual transmission, this car could really carve some roads or blast down the highway.
This Ferrari first came to us in the summer of 2017 with several thousand miles on it. Thankfully they were babied miles and we had a car in excellent shape that just needed a little love and a lot of protection. The owner likes to drive his cars a lot and we wanted to make sure that it would look its best and stay that way for a long time to come. We brought the vehicle in and did a decontamination detail wash on it. We also removed the failing factory installed PPF strips on the rocker panels intake areas. Then we began the polishing the Nero Daytona Metallic paint. It was in very good condition and didn’t require extensive time to perfect. The next step was to install PPF film on the front end and Rocker Panels. During this install in 2017, we installed a partial front end which covers the leading 22” of the hood and wraps around to the corresponding fenders. We also protected the headlights, bumper and side view mirrors with the film. Ceramic Pro 9H ceramic glass coating was applied to all remaining pained areas included the cowl under the convertible hard top. The Ceramic Pro Light (now called Top Coat) was installed over the entire car including the PPF for additional protection, slickness and gloss! The wheels were removed and thoroughly cleaned then the wheels and calipers were coated with Ceramic Pro Wheel and Caliper for years of protection, high gloss and ease of cleaning.
One small piece of glass black vinyl was installed to hide the chrome grille surround. It was a small touch, but definitely helped the California look just a little bit tougher!
The interior received a special deep conditioning treatment called Leatherique. Its a 2 part system in which the first step is massaging the conditioner into the leather surfaces by hand to create heat and release the enzymes in the product. The leather is left like this for 24 hours to allow the product to exfoliate all of the contaminants in the leather pores as well as thoroughly permeate the hide itself. Once that time has elapsed, the cleaner product is used to remove the left over conditioner along with all of the dirt and oils that were pushed out of the leather. Once this process is complete the leather will be cleaner, the fragrance returns and it will be soft supple and matte in appearance.
When the California returned to us in the summer of 2019, we were able to repair a small damaged area on the leading front splitter and reinstalled the PPF on the front bumper. While it was in, the owner decided to upgrade the PPF on the hood and fenders to a full front end for better protection and aesthetics. While it was in the studio, we put some attention onto the Ceramic Coated surfaces as well and installed a fresh Top Coat layer. The new PPF also received a Top Coat as well to enhance the gloss and protection. The owner drove the car for another year before selling it and buying a Ferrari Portofino, the Californias successor. We will have a future write up on the massive amount of protection and customizing that we performed on that one!
